WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FFP MASKS AND SURGICAL MASKS?
FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3 masks protect against fine airborne pollutants, such as dust and aerosols, or - in the case of FFP3 masks - also against viruses. These masks are made of high-quality filter material and fit closely to the face to achieve the required high filtration performance. Certified FFP masks are considered personal protective equipment (PPE) and meet the requirements of the European standard for FFP's EN 149. Masks without exhalation valve can also prevent the wearer from dispersing exhaled droplets and saliva. Some FFP masks without valve are therefore additionally tested and approved as medical products according to EN 14683.
Surgical masks primarily prevent the wearer from spreading droplets and saliva when exhaling. The masks themselves provide protection against liquid splashes such as blood, but not against fine aerosols. The medical products, also known as surgical masks, are tested and approved according to EN 14683.
FFP1, FFP2 AND FFP3
FFP masks protect against polluting particles such as dust, smoke and aerosols. They are available in the three protection levels FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3. They are standardised throughout the European Union according to EN 149:2001+A1:2009. Respiratory masks with higher protection levels filter more effectively and can therefore be used against more harmful substances and higher concentrations of pollutants.
FFP1 masks can be used at contaminant concentrations up to 4 times the workplace exposure limit (WEL).

The total leakage of an FFP1 mask is maximum 22%. At least 80% of contaminants are filtered from inhaled air.

FFP2 masks can be used at contaminant concentrations up to 10 times the workplace exposure limit (WEL).
They protect against harmful water- and oil-based particles. They do not protect against carcinogens, radioactive particles, risk group 3 airborne biological agents and enzymes.
The total leakage of an FFP2 mask is a maximum of 8%. At least 94% of contaminants are filtered out of inhaled air.
Common applications for an FFP2 mask include working with soft wood, metal, plastics (not PVC) and oil mist.
FFP3 masks can be used at contaminant concentrations up to 20 times the workplace exposure limit (WEL).
They protect against harmful and carcinogenic water- and oil-based particles, as well as radioactive particles, airborne biological agents of risk group 2+3 and enzymes.
The total leakage of an FFP3 mask is maximum 2%. At least 99% of pollutants are filtered out of inhaled air.
Typical applications for an FFP3 mask include working with heavy metals, hardwood, brake dust, radioactive substances, pathogens such as viruses, bacteria and mould spores, and welding stainless steel.
